About Pahalgam !
Pahalgam is just another mountain resort of Kashmir in Anantnag district. Pahalgam
is also known as "Valley Of Shepherds". It is located in the north
Kashmir, It is 96km away from Srinagar and its altitude is almost 2130m above sea
level. Pahalgam lies on the either side of the Lidder river, the source of which
is Kolohoi glacier. Pahalgam also receives heavy snowfall during the winter which
makes it a suitable place for Skiing and other Snow Sports. Pahalgam offers a large
variety of hotels of all categories to its visitors.
Pahalgam is a favorite destination to the tourists even in off seasons when actually
the best seasons to visit here are March – November. Travelling options are limited
in Pahalgam, one can travel with taxi, pony or just roam around by foot. In earlier
times it was the favorite place for shooting of bollywood films. Hindu pilgrims
from all over india visit Pahalgam to seek the blessings of lord Shiva as the ice
forms a natural shivling in Amaranth Cave.
Pahalgam, being a most liked place by tourists was still a full-fledged village
with some small shops, hotels and resorts but now it has been commercialized, Markets
of Pahalgam are famous for being heavily flooded by Kashmiri products which are
unique to tourists. Shops in Pahalgam offer typical Kashmiri stuff like Shawls,
Carpets, Clothing with unique Kashmiri embroidery and Pherens (long woolen cloak).
The main markets in Pahalgam are: Laripora and Aru.
The famous and most liked sites in Pahalgam are :
- Chandanwari : 16km from Pahalgam , it's the starting point for the
annual Amaranth Yatra held in summer. The Amaranth Cave, houses an ice stalagmite
in the shape of a natural shivling, which waxes and wanes in the moon
- Betaab Valley: This place was once known as "Hajan valley", it
got renamed after the release of the bollywood movie "betaab" as it's maximum part
was shot in this valley so it got renamed from "Hajan Valley" to "Betaab Valley".
- Aru Valley: 15kms from Pahalgam, this place is everything in itself,
The way through the village to Aru is also amazing and delightful . This village
is also a way to Kolohoi glacier. It’s also an ideal place for camping, it’s recommended
for tourists to travel by foot to catch the serene beauty of this valley.
Must do things to do in Pahalgam :
- Trekking: Pahalgam is also favorable place for trekkers as Aru
Valley, Kolohoi glacier, Tarsar Lake and Chandanwari are ideal places for trekking
- Rafting:Lidder River's white water can be really ideal and adventurous
to rafters. Lidder River flows down the forests of Pahalgam which can be an incredibly
awesome experience for the serious rafters.
